Bar Jules
609 Hayes (at Laguna)
San Francisco, CA 94102
A charming small restaurant in Hayes Valley that changes its entire menu virtually every day (check the blackboard on the Web site to find out whats cooking), in response to whats fresh and local and the whim of owner-chef Jessica Boncutter. The menu is tightly focused: usually theres a soup, a salad, two to four other plates that can serve as starters or light entrées, two big-plate entrées, and two desserts. House-cured boquerones (white anchovies) often appear with salads or on grilled toast (once, memorably, with avocado and arugula). Plump grilled quail might arrive with roasted cherries, in season; braised shortribs with white beans, carrots, and a garlicky salsa verde. Swordfish under crushed-olive sauce might be sided with German butterball potatoes and French green beans. A frequent dessert is the River Cafe Chocolate Nemesis, a divine flourless cake. The changing wine list is as brief and focused as the menu, but marries well with the fare. - Meredith Brody
