This Independence Day weekend, celebrate the (mostly) olden days of music with Megafaun. The rootsy trio from Durham, North Carolina, specializes in stringed and fingerpicked instruments, from banjos to violins and guitars. Add some melancholy piano melodies, and you have pensive folk heavy on rustic harmonies with light outbursts of ambient feedback. Like its contemporaries in Bon Iver, Megafaun keeps things deceptively simple with delicate vocals. But unlike that band, these guys will indulge in 11 minutes of lysergic experimentation on one track, and then snap back into a drunken Band-ish ballad the next. Bury the Square, the group's new record, continues to show off the folkies' broad emotional and sonic range.
